Six communities in Barker will have access to a $15 million Economic Development Fund for Basin community projects.

Member for Barker Tony Pasin said Round 2 of the Murray-Darling Basin Economic Development Program will provide an economic boost for the communities of Morgan, Waikerie, Blanchetown, Mannum, Murray Bridge and Tailem Bend.

“This will be available for targeted, grass-roots projects in these six communities that have been hit by water buy backs,” Mr Pasin said.

“Successful projects will help to diversify the economy by boosting jobs and businesses in the short and long term.

“Water recovery hasn’t just hurt irrigators, the whole community has struggled as a result and this program recognises everyone needs support.

“People in these communities know what works for their community and with this program they’ll help to ensure that these communities are viable and sustainable into the future.”

Eligible organisations include councils, indigenous corporations, cooperatives, incorporated associations and not-for-profits.
