Member for Barker, Tony Pasin wants to boost the region’s economy by hosting more tertiary students on Coalition Government scholarships.

Tony Pasin has called on local universities and VET providers to apply for funding to offer Destination Australia scholarships through their institution.

Destination Australia scholarships will provide students up to $15,000 a year through 250 additional scholarships to study and live in region areas.

“We all know that our regions are amazing places to live and these scholarships are an opportunity to attract more young people to live and study in our region,” Mr Pasin said.

“Attracting more students to live and study here will support local businesses and create jobs while invigorating our communities.

“Our regions have a lot to offer students socially and culturally, and we also have a lot to gain. This will be particularly important as we work to recover economically from the coronavirus pandemic.”

Vocational education providers and universities in Barker can apply to offer scholarships of up to $15,000 a student per year from 2021, for students undertaking qualifications from a Certificate IV through to PhD.

“Last year, 10 Destination Australia scholarships were offered by Uni SA to students to study in Mount Gambier and 12 by Flinders Uni to study in the Riverland,” Mr Pasin said.

Tertiary education providers should check their eligibility and apply via Community Grants Hub. Applications close on 7 July. Students can apply directly to institutions.
