Federal Member for Barker Tony Pasin MP is calling on the South Australian State Government to take urgent action on a number of fronts in the interests of river communities impacted by flood waters.

In a letter to Premier Peter Malinauskas, Mr Pasin has outlined six issues impacting river residents and is calling on the Premier to address each matter urgently.

“I’ve been speaking to many residents along the river and each community I visit has identified issues that need to be addressed. Some issues I’ve been able to find solutions to, but others require a broader strategic approach,” Mr Pasin said.

“As a local Federal Member of Parliament representing river communities, I’ve got my ear to the ground speaking to communities every day and I’m determined to ensure that no one is left behind. To achieve this, coordinated strategies and well communicated, up to date information is required,” Mr Pasin said.

Mr Pasin’s letter outlines six recommendations:

  1. Develop and implement a coordinated plan for additional support for vulnerable people
  2. Develop and implement an alternative accommodation strategy for displaced residents
  3. Conduct community drop-in information sessions with SA Power Networks and SA Water
  4. Clarify funding eligibility for all flood mitigation efforts undertaken by Local Government.
  5. Outline consistent guidelines and protocols regarding evacuation requirements
  6. Provide additional funding support particularly for those for whom losses will continue for many months.

“I welcome the State Government’s support measures to date but there is more work to do to ensure river communities are sufficiently supported before, during and after the peaks,” Mr Pasin said.

“I want to ensure Government is standing shoulder to shoulder with river communities, giving the best information and support possible as we navigate our way through the highest river levels, we’ve seen in nearly half a century,” Mr Pasin said.
