Dear Editor,

I write to reassure Riverland communities that the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is absolutely not cutting services to the region.

This ‘fake news’ originated by the Public Sector Union and is completely false.

What is true is that advances in technology mean that the BOM’s routine forecasting can largely be done from a few specialised locations with less resources, allowing BOM staff greater capacity to work with local communities on the ground, with emergency services and to provide customised services to local industry.

No Bureau staff are being forced to relocate. Staff no longer required for particular roles due to the advances in technology, will be reassigned to local jobs that deliver better services for local communities.

This has been a scare campaign run by the union, ignoring the facts.

Yours sincerely,
