LABOR MAKING NO PROGRESS ON ROAD SAFETY

Shadow Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Tony Pasin MP says Labor is making such little progress on road safety that they can’t even publish a National Road Safety Annual Progress Report that was due in early 2024.

At the Infrastructure and Transport Minister’s Meeting held in Hobart late last year, Ministers noted the 2023 National Road Safety Annual Progress Report and agreed to publish a report in early 2024.

“Despite noting concern at the increasing national road toll, Ministers have failed to publish a National Road Safety Annual Progress Report in early 2024 as agreed,” Mr Pasin said.

Mr Pasin said the latest figures from the department show that deaths on Australian roads for the month of March 2024 were 4.2 per cent higher than the average for March over the previous five years.

“109 people lost their lives on Australian roads last month,” Mr Pasin said.

“Monthly figures continue to tell us that Australia is well off track to achieving National Road Safety Strategy targets and yet the Federal Labor Government are making no progress on data sharing with States and Territories and have failed to even publish a road safety progress report on time,” Mr Pasin said.

“Labor is failing Australians on road safety,” Mr Pasin said.

The road safety task is being made more difficult by the Albanese Government’s decision to cancel, cut, and delay more than $25 billion in infrastructure funding over its first two years in government.
