LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor,

Easter is a time that Christians commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In a broader sense Easter is about renewal and rebirth. It is a time for reflection and a time to slow down and spend time with family and friends.

It’s also a long weekend when many take the opportunity to travel away from home resulting in a busy time on our roads.

While I encourage readers to enjoy this break, I urge all motorists to take extra care.

The final half of 2023 was the deadliest six months on Australian roads in over a decade with a sobering 681 people losing their lives on our roads.

The most recent figures released by the department show that deaths on Australian roads for the month of February 2024 were 15 per cent higher than the average February over the previous five years.

While Government can do more to improve safety on Australian roads, all motorists bear responsibility for driving these horrific statistics down.

If you are planning a trip this Easter I encourage you to do your vehicle road safety check before leaving, plan your route, avoid distractions and take regular breaks from driving.

We can all take these simple steps to keep ourselves and others safe on our roads this Easter.

Give yourself the best chance to enjoy this weekend by keeping road safety front of mind.

Enjoy this special time with family and friends, but be sure to stay safe on our roads.
