Dear Editor,
The 25th day of April is a significant date for all Australian’s.
On that day we commemorate the story of a young Commonwealth Nation’s first military campaign in 1915, one that forms a central part of our national identity.
It’s a day that we remember the courageous soldiers who landed on the Gallipoli Peninsular before dawn and their powerful, enduring legacy.
The landing at Gallipoli and the 10 months that followed were a defining moment in our history and the traits that were exemplified by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corp – bravery, ingenuity, endurance and mateship – have become enshrined as defining aspects of the Australian character.
Pride in this national character is illustrated each year at ANZAC Day services around the country as we gather to remember the more than 1.5 million service men and women who have defended our country in all conflicts, wars and peacekeeping operations and the more than 102,000 who have sacrificed their futures for ours.
I encourage your readers to attend a local service, take pride in our Nation and honour those who have fought to protect it.
