Member for Barker Tony Pasin MP has welcomed the completion and switch on of the new mobile base station providing improved phone service for the Geranium community.

The former Coalition Government provided the Southern Mallee District Council with just under $400,000 to help fund the installation of a 4GX Mobile Base Station at Geranium with Telstra.

With the tower now switched on and providing service, Mr Pasin said it was just in time following the 3G switch off.

“My office has been inundated with reports of loss of mobile phone service since 3G was switched off but thanks to the funding from the former Coalition Government to the Southern Mallee District Council and their partnership with Telstra, Geranium and surrounds is now receiving reliable 4G service,” Mr Pasin said.

Southern Mallee District Council Mayor Ron Valentine said the new tower was a huge boost for the community.

“Connectivity is so important for rural communities, driving business, innovation, and providing a critical connection for our community's safety and wellbeing. We are pleased in working with our local Federal member Tony Pasin MP to deliver this key piece of infrastructure,” Mayor Valentine said.

Mr Pasin said the former Coalition Government has made significant investment into addressing mobile blackspots, funding 32 locations across Barker to receive upgraded base stations.

“The Labor Government has no credibility when it comes to addressing mobile blackspots. After two years in Government Labor has failed to fund and construct any new mobile base stations anywhere in Barker to improve service prior to the 3G shut down,” Mr Pasin said.
