STATEMENT
The Albanese Labor Government’s decision to recognise a Palestinian state is a reckless move that undermines the path to genuine peace in the Middle East.
For decades, there has been a bi-partisan understanding that recognition should come only at the conclusion of a negotiated peace process – not while Hamas remains in control of Gaza and hostages remain captive. By rewarding violence with political recognition, the Government has sent the wrong message to the world and risks emboldening extremists.
This decision places Australia out of step with its closest ally, the United States, at a time when unity among democratic nations is critical. Australia’s friendship with Israel is built on our shared democratic values and respect for the rule of law, and any steps taken must strengthen, not undermine, the prospects for real and lasting peace.
Rather than advancing peace, this move risks derailing the very process that could one day deliver a viable Palestinian state. All Australians want the bloodshed in Gaza to end, but lasting peace will only be possible when it is built on security, trust, and the rejection of terrorism – not rushed political posturing.
