Statement on the detection of H5 Bird Flu at Robe, South Australia
The confirmation of H5 avian influenza in a wild greater crested tern at Robe is a timely reminder of the importance of ongoing vigilance across our region.
While this detection is concerning, it is important that the community remains calm and follows the advice of the relevant authorities. At this stage, there is no evidence of infection in commercial poultry in Australia and the risk to human health remains low.
The Limestone Coast is home to internationally significant coastal and marine environments, as well as a world-class primary production sector. Protecting our wildlife, our environment and our agricultural industries must remain a priority.
Many communities across Barker rely on agriculture, tourism and healthy coastal ecosystems. Early detection, strong biosecurity and community awareness are essential to protecting local jobs, our environment and the industries that underpin our regional economy.
I encourage everyone across Barker, particularly those who live, work or spend time along our coastline, to be alert for sick or dead birds and other wildlife.
If you encounter a sick or dead bird:
- Do not touch or handle the animal.
- Keep children and pets well away.
- If it is safe to do so, note the location and take a photograph.
- Report it immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
Prompt reporting is one of the most effective ways authorities can monitor the situation and respond quickly to any emerging risks.
I thank the local residents who have already reported suspected cases, along with the biosecurity officers, wildlife experts and volunteers working to monitor and respond to this detection.
I will continue to monitor developments closely and remain in contact with the relevant authorities to ensure Barker receives the support and resources needed to protect our communities, our environment and our primary industries.
I encourage anyone seeking more information to visit the Australian Government's H5 bird flu information hub at https://www.agriculture.gov.au/campaigns/birdflu, which includes the latest advice on reporting sick or dead birds and understanding the current situation in Australia.
